GASPARILLA MUSIC FESTIVAL 2017: FIVE BANDS TO KNOW (IF YOU ALREADY DON’T)

Most fans already know the headliners – Ryan Adams, Cage The Elephant, Ghostface Killah – and some of the supporting acts including those who love to visit Florida often: Moon Taxi, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Los Amigos Invisibles. However, Gasparilla always curates a genre-diverse roster that features both local and left-field bands, sure to enrich the two-day celebration of art and creativity.

Bears and Lions

Falling somewhere between a G-rated Tenacious D and a Saturday morning cartoon, Bears and Lions are a goofy duo of what could best be described as kids folk rock. Although they list Michael Jackson, John Denver, and Kermit the Frog as influences, the Gainesville-based band have more in common with the easy, breezy harmonies of Fountains of Wayne and the semi-serious hooks of an another animal-themed outfit, The Aquabats. Although they should probably have their own children’s show by now, Bears and Lions are charming and funny enough that both parents and adults, in general, might get a kick out of their furry festivities.

The Orange Blossom Revue, which took place on the shores of Lake Wailes Friday night, is an event hosted by the Lake Wales Rotary Club. The proceeds benefit Lake Wales recreation and parks projects, so the community is investing in the community by attending.

Bears and Lions, a band that dresses up as animals while performing quirky songs about pancakes and airplanes, livened up both the children and adults in the audience.

The event begins at 7 p.m. when members of the Bears and Lions band take the stage dressed as wild, fluffy animals.

“I’ve never seen a squirrel play the drums,” Wagner said. “I think that’s pretty amazing.”

Itty-Bitty Review: We’re a Club in the Woods – Bears and Lions

My introduction to the Florida-based duo Bears and Lions was at Kindiefest a couple years back, where a couple guys dressed up as, yes, a bear and a lion (in ’70s era basketball uniforms, no less), strode up on stage and proceeded to play one of the more goofy sets of songs I’d heard in kids music. Jangly, southern-fried guitar-pop songs about jumping out of airplanes, man’s best friend, and PAN! CAKE! SWEEP! STAKES! (Just listen to “Pancakes” all the way through, trust me.)
